Here at Princess Cornflower, we wanted only the best fabrics for our line. We chose hemp for its luster, drape, versatility, endurance and softness. We chose certified organic cotton for its softness, comfort and ease. And we threw in some vintage fabrics for their fun prints and romantic florals. "Hemp For Victory!"
— 1942 USDA Motion Picture

We tried hemp for our Oulie skirt and we were sold — hemp linen has that nice nubby feel but is super soft and moves beautifully!

For clothing, hemp is the longest and strongest plant fiber. That translates into supple and durable. Hemp fabric gets softer after each washing, but stays strong. And, it’s versatile, producing fabric of varying weights and weaves — from heavy twill to summer dress weight linen, to tee shirt knits.

And using hemp fabric is good for one lady in particular — Mother Earth. Here are a few facts about hemp that really amazed us:

  • Hemp is the ideal rotation crop, putting down a taproot 12” long in only 30 days — Preventing soil erosion
  • Hemp needs little water — Less or No irrigation necessary.
  • Hemp roots and leaves are where the soil nutrients concentrate. After harvest, roots remain and leaves are returned to fields (only stalks needed) — Soil nutrients are preserved
  • Hemp doesn’t need many nutrients
  • Hemp doesn’t require chemical fertilizer
  • Hemp out-competes other weeds — No Herbicides needed
  • Hemp produces protective resins that keep pests off — No Pesticides — That’s Right!
  • Hemp actually leaves the soil in better condition than before planting.

In fact, widespread use of Hemp could produce an array of environmental benefits, including but not limited to:

  • Less reliance on fossil fuels, and less reliance on foreign sources for those fuels
  • More efficient use of energy
  • Forest conservation
  • Reduction of agricultural pesticide use
  • Landfill use reduction
  • Dioxin and other pollutant use reduction

From corduroy overalls to breezy sarongs, Hemp is a fabric we love!

Cotton: Heap o’ Great Living in Every Bale!

We’ve known for years that hemp is a wonder fabric — beautiful, versatile, and sustainable — but how about organic cotton?

How about this:

  • While total conventional cotton growing makes up less than 1% of US agricultural lands, it consumes about 25% of the pesticides — the most of any production crop!

  • About 1/3 pound of chemicals go into the average conventional cotton tee shirt!

Organic Cotton is grown without the use of the dangerous and often ineffective chemicals. Natural predators, such as the ladybug, are used to control pests. Only natural fertilization is used.

Organic cotton is processed without chemical fillers, finishes, solvents and toxic dyes. Not only is it better for the soil, it is healthier for the people wearing it.

And, we discovered in producing our line: Organic cotton is softer! Try it and See! We Think You’ll Agree!
